Court / Legal Issues

When can a therapist break confidentiality in Florida?

The law protects the relationship between a client and a therapist, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission. Exceptions include Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse, for which I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.

Marriage/Relationship Counseling:

Confidentiality: Information shared in therapy is generally confidential and will not be released without written authorization, except when required or permitted by law. This may include exceptions such as reporting child, elder, or dependent adult abuse, or if a client is a danger to themselves or others.

Allegiance to the couple unit:

Counseling adheres to a "no secrets" policy, meaning the counselor will not hold secrets for either partner. This policy is intended to prevent conflicts of interest that may arise when an individual's interests are not consistent with the couple unit.
